Our pestemals are hand-woven on semi-automatic looms by local artisans in Buldan, a historic small town on the Aegean coast of Turkey.
Semi-automatic looms have been used in Buldan for almost a hundred years as an alternative to the traditional shuttle looms used for centuries, to meet the increasing demand.
These special looms require the supervision of artisans, but the transition to semi-automatic machines offers them the opportunity to weave more towels in the same amount of time, thus earning more money to support their families. For the locals of this small town, where every family still makes a living from weaving, this was a dream come true.
The proliferation of fully automatic looms and industrial production could forever change the long-standing traditions of Buldan artisans. Fortunately, there are still a handful of families using semi-automatic looms in the hope of keeping their traditions alive.
Care and washing
We recommend washing your peshtemal before use. Machine wash cold with like colors and tumble dry on medium heat. This natural fabric is perfect as is, please avoid using bleach or harsh detergents to ensure it serves you for years to come.

Why should I use a pestemal?
A pestemal is a traditional type of towel used in Turkey. It is typically made from cotton or a cotton-linen blend, woven in a flat and lightweight style with a distinctive texture. Unlike the thick terrycloth that is common in many places, pestemals are thinner, often feature stripes or subtle patterns, and are finished with hand-knotted fringe.
Dries quickly
